Dispatches from the Abyss: What we can learn from Hungary Today?

I know, what does this have to do with witchcraft? Not much, but the world we live in informs our magick and our magick informs the world we live in. As you probably know by now that I am of Ukrainian descent and very passionate and involved in the history of Eastern/Central Europe and have been reconnecting with all aspects of my ancestry. My family came from the borders of now Western Ukraine along the bordered of Transylvania, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. I didn't know how much of our family history was tied to Hungary and Hungarian nobility and royalty prior to the Fall of the Polish-Lithuania Commonwealth where it gets really messy and stays that way for a very long time.

I started working with additional ancestral currents last summer since I have been in ancestral healing mode. Being Eastern European mostly just means that my ancestors have been killing each other off for probably a solid millennia. Even now, Hungary under Putin's thumb caused great harm to the war effort in Ukraine. Slovakia and Czechia don't seem to care much of the neighbors on those borderlands either. No matter how bad things get and no matter how much progress has been made, there will always be those trying to pull us back down to the only ways they know and from the former Soviet bloc countries - that is going to lean towards the authoritarian control they knew under Soviet communism - which was great if you were an oligarch or political loyalist and not even remotely okay if you were anyone else.

What can we learn from 80% of Hungarians voting out their Putin puppet authoritarian leader Victor Orbán?

I am already seeing criticisms from the privileged western take that Magyar is also conservative and they didn't elect a liberal leftist candidate. This centers the focus on Western thought, an often alien concept to the former bloc countries (and myself most of the time) much in the same way internet wannabe communists deny the Holodomor genocide and negate the lived experiences of the very people who lived under very real Soviet oppression because they at best watched a TikTok video and maybe read a theory book, but I digress.

True and sustainable progress takes time. Even small progress is progress and a reason for hope and celebration without a bunch of privileged Westerners going "well actually" and then inserting tone deaf optics with barely functional knowledge of Hungary as a country. They seem upset that there is no magic wand and unicorn candidates to click their heels three times and then we all lived happily ever after. I know progress will take time for them, as it will here once MAGA falls and they will fall.

Voting out fascist authoritarians is, in fact, possible so voting actually apparently seems to matter. Orbán had Hungary in a death grip for 16 years and they managed to vote him out knowing he was a Putin puppet and no one had to 'burn it all down' to do so. Of course, there have been massive protests for months now, and 80% voter turn out is huge. It also shows that ruzzia is weak and their empire too shall fall, as will amerika.

The world is awful and on fire every day and full of horrible news so for the fucking love of god LET PEOPLE CELEBRATE THE WINS. This is how we survive right now on nuggets of hope. I have no love lost for Orbán's reign of terror on the Hungarian people, but I have hope for them - that they can begin to step out of the darkness without having to face the "well actually" critiques from the armchair resistance peanut gallery. They do have a long road ahead of them in rebuilding their country and reconnecting with the world beyond ruzzia's control. For that, I celebrate Hungary because someday soon (hopefully) amerika will stop the madness and get itself out of this mess.
